The railway displays highlight one of Armagh's most tragic events - Ireland's worst railway disaster. In 1889, just a few miles from Armagh, a Sunday school excursion train bound for a seaside trip to Warrenpoint stalled on a hill overlooking the city. The decision to separate the carriages proved to be a fatal one. A break failure caused some of them to career back towards Armagh where they hit an oncoming train. The result was over 400 people injured and 89 killed.

A substantial part of the railway collection is in storage though useful catalogues exist. As with the displays, it mainly features the Great Northern and Clogher Valley railways; Bessbrook and Newry Tramways; and the Armagh, Keady & Tynan light railway. If you are particularly interested in railways you might want to view the sections on researching the collections or looking at photographs.
