When Armagh County Museum opened to the public in 1937, it inherited a collection of objects from the Armagh Natural History and Philosophical Society who previously occupied the building. This cabinet of curiosities included material from abroad as well as from neighbouring counties. Through a combination of generous donations and astute purchases the collections have expanded and now focus on material specifically related to County Armagh.
Reflecting the rapid changes in lifestyles, industry and the built environment, the Museum also collects a representative sample of modern material so that future generations can look back at life in county Armagh towards the end of the 20th century.
The collections have been arranged under a number of headings, reflecting the displays, but they can only provide a glimpse into the history and culture of the orchard county.
